Shopping for the boys and men in my life is one of the hardest things to do. Believe it or not. Dayton [...]

Shopping for the boys and men in my life is one of the hardest things to do. Believe it or not. Dayton for the most part is pretty simple because he likes the usual stuff: Guns, Swords, Action Figures etc. Yet there are times that I prefer to buy him things for his room, clothes or stuff that doesn’t fall into the, “Yes, you can play with this” category. He does like that stuff too and when I do buy it I like to make a large impression on him.

Brent on the other hand I can’t buy anything for him. He NEVER asks for anything. Ever. So I normally have to use my imagination to get him something great. This is where Executive Gift Shoppe came into play.

About Executive Gift Shoppe:

Executive Gift Shoppe started as a small personalized gift store in Nanuet, NY in 1999 catering to the wedding & corporate gift industry. We built our reputation by providing unique, engraved & personalized gifts at affordable prices. Over the years, we have added thousands of new products, may personalized and many that aren’t. One thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to quality and, more importantly, our commitment to customer service.

They have absolutely everything you can think of from Business Card Holders to Flasks. Many of the items are able to personalized too! So of course I picked out a sports item that would go in Dayton’s room. While I wanted to focus on Brent, our sons walls are looking bare. I like to keep the kids’ rooms themed to their personality, so we are doing a lot of sports stuff in his room.

We got the Arizona Diamondbacks Locker Room Picture personalized with our last name, Greer.

It came packaged perfectly as to not break during shipping. It came also with the piece to hang it up with. The frame is gorgeous and all around this is a magnificent addition to his room.

Just looks fabulous in his room!

Stay tuned a giveaway with Executive Gift Shoppe will be up tomorrow!

While Brent was home we sat down one Sunday and watched the Nascar race. It’s something we used to do while he [...]

While Brent was home we sat down one Sunday and watched the Nascar race. It’s something we used to do while he was home all the time. He had his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon and I had my favorite driver – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hey, give me a break I was new to the Nascar scene, it wasn’t long after his Daddy had died and I bought into the bandwagon. My views have since changed and so apparently has he. (i.e Dale Jr)

So as we were sitting there I started thinking about the changes, while small in contrast, Nascar has gone through. Danica Patrick is now racing (not in the Sprint Cup), some racers have retired, some have dominated the sport (Jimmie Johnson), some have started their own team and of course cars have been changed and introduced. But Nacar needs a makeover and a big one – listen up Nascar here are my ideas!

nascar.com

1. Tell Danica to go back to open wheel. Seriously, I am all for women becoming integrated into sports that are strongly dominated by men, all for it – but this chick is either on the news whining about something or posing half nude for something else. Shut up and drive girl. If you want to make it in the sport, prove to us you can. Otherwise – BE GONE. Nascar doesn’t need sex or scandals to sell. It’s a sport with fast cars and car crashes.

2. Darrell Waltrip needs to be FIRED. FIRED. FIRED. He may have been a great racer back in his day (I’m talking WAY BACK) but his voice seriously makes me break out in hives. Nascar, if you ever want to lose the whole “redneck”, “back country”, “good ol’ boy” image and be portrayed to the naysayers as a mans sport – lose the idiot who says “Boogity, Boogity, Boogity” before every race. PLEASE!

3. Get over Dale Earnhardt Jr like I did. While our hearts will be with his Daddy and we will always have kinship and special friendship with him – he’s NOT his Daddy. He is his own racer. One that has a bad attitude and needs to learn to work as a team with his crew members. And his crew members, especially his crew chief, need to man up and tell him to shut up and drive too. You are your own person JR quit with the antics and show us the driver you are.

4. Get rid of that dude that does back flips too. Seriously this isn’t the Olympics. It’s a sport with vehicles. Fast ones. Ones that draw me in. I’m not drawn into the sport because you want to pull stunts and look cool. It’d be a whole lot cooler if you won something like, oh, Jimmie Johnson.

5. Make the drivers that have to use a cane or wheelchair to get to their cars because they are 100+ years old retire. I liked watching them drive when they were young, in their prime and worth their weight as a driver. But this isn’t the Senior Races (no offense to those that are older than I) this is Nascar. When I think fast cars – I think Jeff Gordon or the likes.

I think those would just begin to help improve the image of Nascar. I love Nascar. I do. But I have to watch it on mute and change the channel all to often because of this. Come on now Nascar – get a makeover!

The Super Bowl is coming up and I’m actually pretty excited about. Well, I am always pretty excited about it. I love Sports. I love Football. But this year like the past couple of years, Brent is not here. So watching a sporting event is sometimes quite boring. I can jump, shout, cheer, scream obscenities and maybe chug a beer alone – but my kids will only stare at me with worry.

And besides the fact that Brent is the go to my fight with all things sports, my TV is still out of commission. Not that we don’t have other TV’s to watch in this house. We do. But my vision of sitting on my couch with my husband watching the Super Bowl in HDTV has been squashed. SQUASHED! I mean I could go and slap a $29.99 barcode on a very expensive TV and hope that the barcode scanner doesn’t pick up the fact that it’s not a TV. But I’m pretty sure I don’t want to spend my Super Bowl Sunday in jail. Then again if they have HDTV in jail I just might do it. At least there I would have somebody to watch the game with, even if they are questionable and not sanitary. I wonder what they would serve if they do watch it? Pizza and wings would be cool.

Either way, The Super Bowl is coming and it’s going to be an exciting game. I think it’s going to be a fun game. I like fun games that are high energy and super intense.

Who are you rooting for?

I have some sports confessions. And most people who have a love of sports will look at me with brow furled and more than likely in disgust. But when you hear me out, maybe then you will understand my reasoning.

So here’s the deal, I normally like teams in the same conference, same division or are playing each other and can’t watch because I’m torn who to root for.

Baseball Confession:

Let’s start with Baseball. I’m pretty sure I bleed blue. Navy blue. For the New York Yankees. They are my #1 team that I love. But they aren’t the only team I cheer for. I cheer for the Atlanta Braves. They are a consistent team and extremely fun to watch. I cheer for the Oakland A’s. I grew up with that team – old habits die hard or not at all.

Football Confession:

I enjoy more than one team in Football, I probably shouldn’t be a Football fan at all. My ultimate #1 team is the Tennessee Titans. I love them. I watched the coverage of the Steve McNair tragedy and cried. No I bawled. I bawled when Eddie George and Derrick Mason no longer played for them. I was devastated to find out that Albert Haynesworth was no longer a Titan. I don’t have a specific reasoning for the love of the Titans. I just do. BUT – here is the big BUT (hey total pun attended, I got some junk in the trunk); I like the Colts too. The first time I saw Peyton Manning start doing audibles – I was a sucker for the Colts. When it comes to quarterbacks – Peyton Manning is #2 next to Brett Favre. Yet…I like the Saints too. And I follow teams that picked up some of my college favorites. When I watched Adrian Peterson in college I told everyone – THAT KID IS GONNA BE A BAD ASS. Can you disagree? I’m a disgrace.

Basketball Confession:

I love the Spurs. They ARE my #1 team. I’ll admit it though, I like the Orlando Magic because of players like Jameer Nelson. And I like the Cleveland Cavaliers because of players like LeBron James and Delonte West. You know Brent and I sat and watched Delonte and Jameer in college and said “Somebody better grab those kids up, they are amazing.” I can’t help but follow them now.

More Confessions:

I hate all teams associated with New England. Patriots….Red Sox.

I hate Hockey. HATE IT. I watch it and want to understand why they are a mix of girly ice skating and football. But I occasionally watch the highlights just to know whats going on.

I enjoy Golf. Yep. I even cheer for Phil Mickelson.

I enjoy Tennis. I remember when Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf were at the top.

I HATE the Olympics in any form for the most part. But I don’t care if Michael Phelps took a toke of a fat doobie. The kid is RAD. And I am a Phelps Phan.

I’m not big on Extreme Sports or X-Games. I grew up with a brother and his friends who were huge into BMX – RAD is one of my all time favorite movies, I just can’t keep up.

I love to watch sports teams a lot of the times because of the player.

So there you have it. I’m a sports fan disgrace.

How many Hail Mary’s should I throw up (another pun!) for confessing my sins?

In two days, The New York Yankees will begin the battle for the World Series crown. The much deserved crown might I add! This has been one heck of a year for them. One year we have been waiting for, for a long time.

I was going to do a post about how the New York Yankees have now won (thus far 12:21 PM Arizona time) [...]

I was going to do a post about how the New York Yankees have now won (thus far 12:21 PM Arizona time) their first game in the 2009 ALCS versus The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. But I realized most people that dislike and hate the Yankees, tend to hate the gloating from the lovers / likers of the team. So I shall not gloat. I’ll let the winning speak for itself.

I am not a lifetime fan of the New York Yankees. I didn’t grow up in the Bronx and had the love of the team breed into me. It just developed. Around 1995 -1996. When Derek Jeter hit the scene. There was something in him that sparked my love for baseball again.

See as a kid. The younger sister. I tagged along with both my sister and brother. Where else should that annoying youngest sibling be, but behind the oldest two? Along the adventures with my oldest brother, I often found myself in the center of what else — sports. I played softball from the moment the city league allowed. I loved it. Was I the best? Destined to be Jennie Finch? No. Unfortunately not. But some of the best of my memories are digging in at home plate to attempt to smack at least a double at the ripe age of 10. I digress.

My brother was a boy. A Brother on all counts. Love of all things boys when we were young. Baseball. BMX. WWE (at that time it was WWF still). And many, many more. One spring my mom and her close friend packed us kids into her car and took us to Brewer Stadium in Chandler, Arizona for a spring training game. Brewer Stadium is now Compadre Stadium home to nothing. Lying empty. A small but important part of what channeled my sport loving side — sits quietly I’m sure waiting to turn into dust. But my friends — my love of baseball will not turn to that. It’s alive and well and living in New York.

That spring I watched the Milwaukee Brewers play the Oakland A’s in spring training. I had a coach, a player — an Oakland A toss me a foul ball. I kept that ball. Forever. It was scuffed and marred with grass stains. It felt real. It felt…well like love in a ball. Later after the game I had a pitcher from the Milwaukee Brewers sign a baseball for me also. I was sold. Buried into the love that is America’s Favorite Pastime forever. And ever.

Those days growing up watching baseball. Watching Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco (as The Bash Brothers) was magical. Mark McGwire was not the celebrity that he is today. He still was an All – Star and well known player. He smacked the ball into homerun territory with a power from his shoulder and legs. You could feel empowered by watching him. There was a player on that 1993 Oakland A’s that I would soon love even more. Scott Brosius. There was Jose Canseco — who I now despise. Rickey Henderson. Ruben Sierra. Ron Darling. Bob Welch. I found my love. It was days filled with pointing that bat like that Great Bambino. Chewing Big League Chewing Gum from the pouch and spitting your saliva to the ground. It was 90 degree weather — clear sunny skies. Fresh cut green grass with stripes. Dirt that looked red and good enough to roll in. It was white baseline stripes. It was running to the end of our street to a then empty field, making bases with wood, rocks, trash. It was choosing teams and being the younger sister, getting chosen last. It was slapping the leather of the inside of my glove with my fist to mimic what the boys were doing. The chanting of “eyyyy batta batta, swinggggg batta batta”, without really knowing why. It was stepping up to home plate, kicking the dirt back to begin the mold for my feet, rotating my feet side to side to for the perfect mold, it was bending slightly at the knees, breathing in deep and raising the bat to my shoulder. It was being scared but confident. Tough but weak. And clearing my mind of nothing but the bat, the ball and my swing. It was heaven.

You hate to lose as a kid. But the competitive nature of the game isn’t as strong. It’s the love. It’s the fun. The smells. The sounds. The freedom that comes in 4 bases, 9 players and 9 innings. It’s a game — but it’s magic. You never lose that memory or that love.

In the year of, oh, 1996, I left my love affair and obsession for Oakland and moved to the West Coast. A new kid had hit town and he played like I remember playing as a kid. But he wasn’t a kid. He was 22 – 23 years old. I was only 13. He was OLD. But he played like I did three years earlier. He had that same smile I had when the first inning has just begun. His eyes were lit up not from the lights of a stadium, but the thrill of not knowing what was going to happen in the next nine innings. Every catch, every throw, every swing of the bat — you saw the heart of a young kid radiating. It was a grown man letting his inner child, the one that loved baseball for all it meant to us back then, shine brightly. It was Derek Jeter playing for the notorious New York Yankees.

If Derek Jeter were a salesman, approaching me saying “Watch me play, watch the New York Yankees and I will give you back the memory of your childhood sports loving days every time it’s game day”, I was the ultimate customer. He bought and sold me in minutes. No seconds. Easily.

The years of the early 1920′s to the late 1940′s were, as we learned in history, flawed. Wars. Great Depression. Anger. Sadness. Frustration. Hate. But what else do you remember from then?

Babe Ruth? Lou Gehrig? The Yankees moving to their stadium (Yankee Stadium which is now no longer with us. *moment of silence please*). It was the “called shot”. New York Yankees “Murderers Row” and the unforgettable speech by The Iron Horse himself. “Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth….”

What about the years moving on from then? The cold war. The civil rights movement. Brown vs. Brown. Dwight D. Eisenhower. And much more. Do you remember Joe DiMaggio? Hitting for 56 consecutive games. The best quote coming from him “I’d like to thank the good lord for making me a Yankee”. When life was in turmoil who did the nation turn to? Baseball. They were our heroes.

What about Roger Maris and the stupid asterisk?

Whitey Ford.

Yogi Berra.

Of course, Mickey Mantle.

A memorable song crooning lyrics, that gives me goosebumps, “Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you..”. Ring true in a form even they may have not understood when writing it.

The eras of the New York Yankees mapped out from the 70′s on in what now everybody can use an excuse to be “haters”. A man understanding business ushering in new Yankees. Developing their history even more.

You can chose to hate them. Maybe there is a perfect psychological meaning to the way we turn on the winners and root for the underdogs. To the way that is described as, those that rise must fall. But I chose not to hate. To love. Embrace. The history of the New York Yankees. They way they have also intertwined with the history of my nation. My childhood. A passion. A fire — ignited with each commencing of the game.

I understand the competitive hatred of the Yankees. I hate the Red Sox. It’s rivalry. It’s the game. It’s self explanatory. The invalid of argument of money I will never understand. Derek Jeter doesn’t play like we did as children because of a paycheck. Nope. If that was the case he would have no heart. No stats. And would not be destined to the Yankees Memorial Park. The number 2 retired from the team. If you chose to hate them, you must at least respect them. 26 World Series Titles. 39 Pennants. Hall of famers in coaches and players. A team that quite possibly could be the reason at times baseball has stayed the pastime we love.

You can chose to hate.

I chose to thank the good lord for making me a New York Yankee fan.
