When Brodie told me she wanted her birthday party to be centered around all things fashion my mind started reeling on how I could pull it off, especially when it came to the cake. I sat down and let my creative juices flow and I created birthday invitations for a fashion party, but how was I going to make a cake? I thought that I could make a square cake and make them look like gifts. Then I could just decorate the cake with shoes, jewelry etc. But that just didn’t seem like a great idea.

Well one of Brodie’s many talents is the ability to design dresses. Yup. That’s my girl. She has notebook after notebook of drawings of dresses. So it struck me, how fun would it be if I had her help me. So I had her draw a outline of a dress on a piece of card stock. I cut it out and that was going to be my template for the dress. Now as a quick warning, before you jump in thinking – wow perfect – this particular cake I made will feed about 15-20 people give or take. So if you are planning a large party, maybe make cupcakes to supplement or find another style of cake.

Here you go though, how to make a dress cake for fashion party!

What You Will Need:

Edible Flowers For Cake

Whipped Icing Mix (Or if you browse my recipes I will update soon with a homemade recipe for this and a link to it)

Pink Sprinkles

Pink Sparkle Gel (I used white also)

Items also needed are:

13×9 cake pan, parchment paper, icing spreader, Red Velvet Cake Mix (or your choice mix and ingredients needed to prepare cake) and knife to cut design of cake. And cake template that my daughter will create and I will post later.

How To:

Prepare the icing and cake mix. Follow the instructions of the icing (you may have to chill) and bake the cake. Set the cake to the side and let it sit. I waited about 2 hours and let it sit in the refrigerator. Once it is ready, cut the design out of the template (will be provided later) and lay it on top of the cake. Use your knife to cut the cake (around the template). You can keep the sides that you cut or just throw them away. Then ice the cake with the whipped icing. Then decorate it with the gel, sprinkles and flowers. Like the picture above and below, your finished product may look similar to that. I did put the cake in the refrigerator over night or up to 4 hours prior to serving!

Brent and I love all things spicy and we have both been talking about me finally making a go at creating our own little salsa or dip. I have done it before but nothing really worth tasting and never tried again. Finally I went and got all the produce I need yesterday to create my marvelous salsa.

Here’s the thing though, I made it TOO SPICY. Way too spicy. But it does taste phenomenal and you can alter it any way that you would like.

Ingredients:

1 Poblano Pepper

2 Jalapeno Peppers

3 Habanero Peppers

1 Small Red Onion

8 Roma Tomatoes

1 Cup Shredded Cilantro

1 Lime

Instructions:

Cube the Roma Tomatoes. I don’t keep the “guts” (seeds etc on the inside) just the rest. Dice up the onion, dice up the peppers (DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE AFTER CUTTING PEPPERS. Make sure to wash your hands). Shred the cilantro the best you can to find pieces. I had the kids tear off the leaves from the stems of the cilantro and then I just cut, cut and cut. Mix all together in a bowl. Cut the lime in half and squeeze the juice from the lime into the salsa. Voila. Spice Spring Salsa.I did add salt and pepper to it afterward and chilled in the refrigerator.

Meatloaf is a quick and easy recipe / meal for me to make around here and the kids actually eat it. I usually serve it with Baked Potatoes and a Vegetable of some sorts. Brent is not the biggest fan of Meatloaf – no he is a pretty picky eater – but he will eat this. So here is the Recipe for The Greer’s Meatloaf.

Ingredients:

1-2lbs of Ground Hamburger Meat (Or Turkey Meat If You Please)

1/3 Cup of Ketchup

3 tbsp of Sour Cream

2 Eggs

1 to 1 1/2 Cups of Ground Cornflakes

3 tbsp of Tomato Paste

1 tbsp of Lipton Onion Soup Mix

Directions:

Preheat Oven to 400 degrees. Mix Everything besides Cornflakes and Meat – stir up very well. Grind up the cornflakes and mix them into the meat. Add the mixture to the meat and put into a bread loaf pan and put into the oven. Sometimes I lightly grease the bread loaf pan but not often. Add salt and pepper and cook for about 45 mins to an hour. You can always check the meat to make sure it is no longer pink inside in the middle while cooking and it won’t dry out. I don’t add ketchup to the top of the mixture like most. Do. Serve and enjoy!

I have made spaghetti sauce from scratch before and it’s an all day task. I use the same recipe for Braciole. Yes…I actually cook on occasion. HA! Either way, I have found the spaghetti sauce from scratch is a truly daunting task. So I’ve learned to take spaghetti sauce already made and make it my own.

How To:

Your Choice Spaghetti Sauce in Jar or Can

Can of Diced Tomatoes

Can of Tomato Sauce

Can of Tomato Paste

McCormick Italian Seasoning

Red Cooking Wine

McCormick Salad Supreme

Garlic Salt

Salt

Pepper

Rosemary

All I do is add all these ingredients together (sometimes I add fresh tomatoes instead of diced) and let it simmer for about three hours. And voila — kicked up spaghetti sauce.

Some day I will actually get down my own recipe for the Braciole and Homemade Sauce…but that’s another day!

With Fall in full swing, Halloween now over, I want to start dishing out some of my recipes. I love cooking (gasp) and baking during the fall. I’m not sure if it warms up my house in the cool weather or if it just feels go to do it.

Here is the recipe for my Pumpkin Fluff Frosting & Cake. A treat I ONLY make once a year and my kids look forward to.

Cake:

Make any flavored cake (I do the white funfetti style cake from Pillsbury) by following directions on box.

Frosting:

1 can pre made pumpkin pie filling

2 cups vanilla pudding

3 cups cool whip

3 cups powdered sugar

I mix all of this together and voila – Pumpkin Fluff. You can use it as a dip with Vanilla Wafers or Graham Crackers or do like I do and put it on a cake as frosting. I then use orange decorating gel and chocolate sprinkles to decorate the cake. You can also put the “fluff” in a graham cracker crust for a meringue style pie also. It’s an easy and tasty recipe that is very versatile!

Pictures of my Pumpkin Fluff Frosted Cake: (Bad quality – took with my phone!)

I don’t make anything fancy dancy. I’m a simple and quick cook. This nacho recipe my Mom originally taught me. I’ve improvised since to a taste our family loves.

Ingredients (Main)

1-2 lbs of Hamburger Meat — I go for super greasy. It’s flavorful. Preferably 80/20 ratio.

Jar Of Pace Picante — You can go with salsa or picante. We prefer picante and not a large jar.

1 Package of Taco Bell Seasoning

1 Can Taco Bell Refried Beans

Tortilla Chips

Shredded Cheese

Directions

Brown meat. We leave the grease in the meat. Add jar of pace picante sauce. Add about 2 -3 tablespoons of the taco bell seasoning. Let simmer for about 10 minutes. Then add can of beans into meat mixture. Let that simmer for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile make a layer of tortilla chips on cookie shit or a oven safe pan. Pour meat / bean mixture of chips. Top with cheese. Stick in the oven for about 20 minutes on about 300 degrees.

Done.

Now you can add salsa, sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes, lettuce, green onions, jalapenos etc to the top afterward. Do it to your liking.
